Independent Mental Capacity Role

Please note that prior to attending the training participants will preferably have had the opportunity to shadow an experienced colleague and will need to have read the MCA Code of Practice: Chapter 2 (Statutory Principles); Chapter 4 (Capacity) pages 40 – 45 and Chapter 5 (Best Interests) which is available on-line.

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 introduced the role of the independent mental capacity advocate (IMCA). In order to undertake the role of the IMCA the Department of Health expect the individual to be appropriately trained and qualified. This training will support learners to develop the underpinning knowledge required to provide Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy support within the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and to explore and reflect on real case examples.

 The qualifications are competency based which means they are designed to develop and test the skills you need to manage advocacy services in real life situations. In order to achieve the accredited unit following the training you will need to l submit a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates you have achieved these practical skills.

The Course will cover

  • Understand and use the Mental Capacity Act
  • Provide Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy
  • Work with the decision maker
  • Challenge decisions made by the decision maker
  • Work with people who lack capacity
  • Work with accommodation and care review referrals
  • Work with serious medical treatment referrals
  • Work with adult protection referrals
  • Construct an IMCA written report that meets statutory requirements
